Warsaw, the capital of Poland, was almost completely destroyed in 1944 by the Nazi occupiers. After World War II ended, over a period of 40 years, the city was rebuilt. The historical parts were faithfully reconstructed based on old drawings, photographs, paintings. These included the Royal Castle (Zamek), the Old Town (Stare Miasto), many old palaces, and most of the Royal Mile - Krakowskie Przedmieście, Nowy Świat. The remainder of the city was completely new, even the street layout was changed to a large degree. For those interested in Warsaw as it was, just before World War II, the part of a 1938 map showing the city center is reproduced here. You may compare it with the map of present day Warsaw.
Warsaw is located on the river Vistula, in the center of Poland. The district on the right (east) bank is called Praga
